Small but Mighty: Why Microhive Stands with Small Charities

26 June 2025

Charities

This Small Charity Week, we’re shining a light on the incredible work of the UK’s small charities and why Microhive is proud to stand with them.

At Microhive, we believe that every charity deserves a voice, visibility, and support, no matter their size. While big charities often take centre stage, it’s the smaller ones often working quietly and relentlessly at the grassroots that deliver some of the most vital impact in our communities.

Sadly in the last two years alone, over 3,000 small charities have closed their doors in the UK. Many more are just barely holding on.

The Big Impact of Small Charities

In the UK, over 80% of registered charities are small operating on less than £100,000 a year. But together, they generate billions in social value. They’re the food banks, youth groups, mental health hotlines, veterans’ support networks, refugee outreach teams, and neighbourhood charities that keep the UK going.

  • Most are volunteer-led, powered by passion, not payrolls
  • They serve where need is highest, often in places national charities don’t reach
  • They’re rooted in trust, built through years of presence and lived experience
  • They respond with agility—pivoting fast in times of crisis

Why Do Small Charities Often Miss Out?

Despite their critical role, small charities frequently get overlooked when it comes to corporate partnerships and funding. Why?

  • They lack the marketing budgets and PR teams of larger organisations
  • Their stories don’t always reach corporate CSR teams or procurement pipelines
  • They’re often unfairly perceived as “riskier” or “less efficient”
  • They don’t have the same access to funding networks or visibility at big events

But these assumptions couldn’t be further from the truth.

Challenges on the Frontline

The past few years haven’t been easy.

  • Many are facing closure as the cost-of-living crisis hits hard
  • Funding is increasingly competitive, with small organisations often left behind
  • Volunteers are stretched thin, and burnout is rising
  • Demand for services—food, housing, mental health is soaring

Why Microhive Supports All Charities

We started Microhive with a simple belief: everyone should be able to give meaningfully, and every charity should have access to supportnot just the big names with the big budgets.

That’s why we:

  • Work with businesses of all sizes to support charities of all sizes
  • Help companies connect with hyper-local, high-impact causes
  • Champion inclusive giving that lifts up underrepresented voices
  • Provide platforms where small charities can shine

Small charities are mighty. They deserve our attention, our support, and our partnership not just during Small Charity Week, but all year round.
